CLUES is a non-profit organization that strives to advance the capacity of Latino families to be healthy, prosperous, and engaged in their communities. Concentrated in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN metro area, CLUES was established by Latinos for Latinos in 1981. For the past 30 years, CLUES has analyzed and adapted its support services to better serve Latino families. The most recent deployed system of services consists of four pillars of support:
- Health and Family Well-being
- Educational Achievement
- Economic Vitality
- Cultural and Civic Engagement
Cultural and Civic Engagement
All four of these pillars of service work together to compliment one another. Recently, Cultural and Civic Engagement has been formally implemented into the CLUES strategic plan. The services within this pillar are designed to provide an opportunity for the Minnesota Latino community to voice their opinions. The clients of CLUES are encouraged to engage in the community in order to voice their opinions regarding issues that matter to them and their families. CLUES believes that this will build social and cultural capital. What does engaging in the community mean exactly though? Well, CLUES offers leadership and empowerment programs to families and youth that enable opportunities for voices to be heard.
Opportunities for Community Engagement
Through collaboration with partnering organizations, CLUES hosts community conversations that provide an environment for Latino families to address issues. The issues commonly barricade families from healthy and prosperous lifestyles. To what degree of severity are these issues? Well, the issues can be quite varied. The issues could range from individuals voicing their concerns with the developing Immigration Reform Act, or the issue could be simply discussing a recent spike of crime in Latino concentrated neighborhoods.
